Let’s go to Monkeytown! Wat je er krijgt? Groovy techno en samenwerkingen met onder andere Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Miss Platnum, Sascha Ring aka Apparat en Siriusmo. Experimenteren en samenwerken is dan ook favoriete bezigheid van het Berlijnse duo. Op Monkeytown, alweer hun derde (eigen) album, hoor je hun kenmerkende sound gemixt met invloeden uit hiphop, electro en IDM. Intro Blue Clouds heet je van harte welkom, de track Grillwalker heeft een heerlijk bouncende melodie, German Clap geeft je het echte Berlijnse club gevoel en op Shipwreck heeft Yorke duidelijk zijn stempel gedrukt. En juist omdat dat de meest ongewone Modeselektor track is, is het de eerste single. Live vooral erg hard, maar oordoppen in en gaan!

Fool's Gold

Leave No Trace

Waar het eerste album van Amerikaanse afro-pop band Fool’s Gold nog vernieuwend was (denk aan het catchy Surprise Hotel), laat het tweede album Leave No Trace – refererend aan de titel – geen sporen na. Met The Dive en Wild Window begint het vrolijk en energiek. Daarna kabbelen de poppy deuntjes voort, maar is het zijn charme echter verloren. Niet dat het niveau daalt, sterker nog; het is een album van constante kwaliteit. Maar ietwat saai. De vijf mannen brengen hun roots duidelijk naar voren, al zingt Luke Top, geboren in Israël, minder in het Hebreeuws dan voorheen. De kenmerkende gitaar riffs en vrolijke Afrikaanse ritmes maken het geschikt voor een lome Californische zomerdag.

The Devil’s Walk

Electronica met een ambient sound, zo is Apparat’s The Devil’s Walk te omschrijven. Na drie eerdere eigen albums is dit toch wel een erg relaxt en volwassen resultaat. Niet zomaar: Sascha Ring, pseudoniem van Apparat, zei winters Berlijn tijdelijk gedag om deze plaat te produceren in een huis met zeezicht in het zonnige Mexico. Hij wilde avontuur in plaats van een gelikt studio-album en heeft zijn genre uitgebreid van techno naar ‘echte’ nummers, bijna ballads. Song of Los, Black Water en Escape, gezongen door Sascha zelf, klinken melancholisch maar niet triest. Ook Candil de la Calle is een fijn lichtpuntje op de kenmerkende Apparat sound.

Ruven Afanador

Ruven Afanador is considered one of the leading photographers working in celebrity and fashion photography. His work appears in most major fashion magazines in the world. Ruven Afanador is an internationally renowned photographer of limitless imagination, powerful vision and profound sense of self. His work is distinguished by an opulent classicism nuanced by an irreverent point of view.

He was born in Colombia and lived there until adolescence. At fourteen, Afanador moved to the United States to attend school in the Midwest, a starkly different place from the magical world of his childhood, but one he saw as full of possibilities. And then, while studying art, he discovered photography. “From my first assignment I knew that photography would be my life’s passion”, says Afanador. With that passion, he would transform ordinary reality into captivating splendor.

In addition to beautiful portraits he makes fabulous photo’s mostly in black and white tones with a good feel on shapes. Like Richard Avedon, he uses sometimes skeletons as models. Or two women in friendship and conflict with each other. His Colombian roots are reflected in the flamenco like women with fans.

When Saints Go Machine

Last May during the festival Indiestad in Paradiso Amsterdam I've seen When Saints Go Machine and I was really impressed. It turned out to be a support act of Caribou of such a serious level that overwhelmed me immediately. The Danish band, with really tall and somehow fragile front man Nikolaj, promised a lot and with international debut album Konkylie (Danish for sea shell) which was released last June they make it happen. A mix between Anthony, James Blake and some light disco house. Especially live recommended, but single Kelly with new video is a nice one to become acquainted.
