The Devil’s Walk

Electronica met een ambient sound, zo is Apparat’s The Devil’s Walk te omschrijven. Na drie eerdere eigen albums is dit toch wel een erg relaxt en volwassen resultaat. Niet zomaar: Sascha Ring, pseudoniem van Apparat, zei winters Berlijn tijdelijk gedag om deze plaat te produceren in een huis met zeezicht in het zonnige Mexico. Hij wilde avontuur in plaats van een gelikt studio-album en heeft zijn genre uitgebreid van techno naar ‘echte’ nummers, bijna ballads. Song of Los, Black Water en Escape, gezongen door Sascha zelf, klinken melancholisch maar niet triest. Ook Candil de la Calle is een fijn lichtpuntje op de kenmerkende Apparat sound.

Ruven Afanador

Ruven Afanador is considered one of the leading photographers working in celebrity and fashion photography. His work appears in most major fashion magazines in the world. Ruven Afanador is an internationally renowned photographer of limitless imagination, powerful vision and profound sense of self. His work is distinguished by an opulent classicism nuanced by an irreverent point of view.

He was born in Colombia and lived there until adolescence. At fourteen, Afanador moved to the United States to attend school in the Midwest, a starkly different place from the magical world of his childhood, but one he saw as full of possibilities. And then, while studying art, he discovered photography. “From my first assignment I knew that photography would be my life’s passion”, says Afanador. With that passion, he would transform ordinary reality into captivating splendor.

In addition to beautiful portraits he makes fabulous photo’s mostly in black and white tones with a good feel on shapes. Like Richard Avedon, he uses sometimes skeletons as models. Or two women in friendship and conflict with each other. His Colombian roots are reflected in the flamenco like women with fans.

When Saints Go Machine

Last May during the festival Indiestad in Paradiso Amsterdam I've seen When Saints Go Machine and I was really impressed. It turned out to be a support act of Caribou of such a serious level that overwhelmed me immediately. The Danish band, with really tall and somehow fragile front man Nikolaj, promised a lot and with international debut album Konkylie (Danish for sea shell) which was released last June they make it happen. A mix between Anthony, James Blake and some light disco house. Especially live recommended, but single Kelly with new video is a nice one to become acquainted.

Bombay Bicycle Club

A Different Kind Of Fix

De indie rockers Jack, Jamie, Suren en Ed van het Britse Bombay Bicycle Club leveren met A Different Kind of Fix alweer de derde plaat in drie jaar tijd. Is dat overdreven haastig of een zeldzame prestatie in de muziekindustrie van nu? Ik zeg optie twee. Vanaf eerste track How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep, tevens soundtrack van Twilight’s Eclipse, raak je in de vrolijke bandjes sfeer. Zoals de albumtitel al deed vermoeden, slaat het kwartet een nieuwe weg in. Een verrassende sound, maar herkenbaar genoeg. De gitaren worden vergezeld van synths en gelaagde zang door alle vier de bandleden. Een krachtig en veelbelovend geheel, met Shuffle en Lights Out, Words Gone als favoriet.

Smalltown Supersound / Konkurrent

Als Kakkmaddafakka-fan kunnen de Noorse ‘zusjes’ van Razika natuurlijk niet onopgemerkt blijven. Ze komen beiden uit het koude Bergen en maken fijne vrolijke, opbeurende muziek die je een heerlijk warm gevoel geeft. De vier 19-jarige dames van Razika zijn samen sinds 2006 en produceren sindsdien een dansbare mix van indiepop, ska en punk met lieflijke vocalen. Program 91 is echter het debuutalbum. En wel een hele sterke. Ze wisselen pop af met punk, Noors met Engels, gitaren met vocalen en hun jeugdige sound met nostalgische klanken. Vooral de uptempo nummers Nytt På Nytt en Middelalder zijn lekker opzwepende frisse knallers met Noorse charme.
